Intensive Anti-Acne ProgramThis is a featured page

What causes acne, and how can it be prevented?

Acne occurs when an excess of oil or bacteria in the hair follicles of the skin causes the follicles to become inflamed. Clogging of the pores (the follicle openings) can lead to a build-up of bacteria. Acne treatments attempt to heal the inflamed areas and to prevent future inflammation by decreasing sebum (oil) production and fighting bacteria.Intensive Anti-Acne Program - ASIAN SKIN AT IT'S BEST.

There are three types of acne:
  • Mild: consists of whiteheads and blackheads
  • Moderate: consists of whiteheads and blackheads as well as papules (bumps) and pustules (pus-containing bumps)
  • Severe: consists of all of the above plus nodules, which are deeply embedded, often painful lesions that may lead to scarring.

To treat mild acne, doctors recommend a three-step skin-care regimen:

  1. Exfoliate the skin to loosen dead skin cells. A buildup of dead skin cells can lead to inflammation in the follicles, so it’s very important to exfoliate the skin as part of a cleansing routine. Never roughly scrub the skin, as it does not help acne and usually makes it worse.
  2. Gently clean the skin with a non-irritating cleanser to remove dead skin cells and excess oil. This allows topical treatments to penetrate the skin better, improving effectiveness.
  3. Treat existing acne and prevent future outbreaks by applying a topical acne treatment and an oil-free moisturizer.

To combat moderate to severe acne, a topical cream or gel, such as Retin-A, or for very severe cases, an oral medication, can be prescribed. Some brands of oral contraceptives (birth control pills) have also been shown effective at controlling acne in women.

Acne patients should avoid aggravating their acne as much as possible. Be sure to protect the skin from the sun; use only noncomedogenic cosmetics, and keep the hair clean and off the face. Avoid wearing tight clothing that rubs against the skin, and don’t pick or squeeze lesions, which can cause infection.
