SALICYLIC ACID is a beta hydroxy acid, which penetrates the superficial skin or epidermis.

The main difference between alpha hydroxy acids (AHA) and beta hydroxy acid (BHA) is their lipid (oil) solubility. Alpha hydroxy acids are water soluble only, while beta hydroxy acid is lipid (oil) soluble.

This means that beta hydroxy acid is able to penetrate into the pore which contains sebum and exfoliate the dead skin cells that are built up inside the pore.

Because of this difference in properties, beta hydroxy acid is better used on oily skin with blackheads and whiteheads.

Alpha hydroxy acids are better used on thickened, sun-damaged skin where breakouts are not a problem.

Beta hydroxy acid is reported to improve wrinkling, roughness, and mottled pigmentation of photodamaged skin.

At the same time, it reduces sebaceous follicle blockage. It is this characteristic, together with its antimicrobial action, that makes salicylic acid an excellent ingredient in acne products.

Beta hydroxy acid works mainly as an exfoliant. It causes the cells of the epidermis to become "unglued" allowing the dead skin cells to slough off, making room for regrowth of new skin.

It works by causing the skin to swell, soften, and then slough or peel in areas where it is applied.

USES: Acne vulgaris, enlarged pores, rough and oily skin, melasma, post-inflammatory hyperpigmentation, and photoaging.

LACTIC ACID is derived from sour milk and is a gentle, natural way to lighten skin.
Lactic acid is found in meat, cheese, yogurt and pickled vegetables.

It is an exfoliant and is often found in combination with other ingredients that lighten, brighten and exfoliate skin.

It is believed that their benefit is in helping cell turnover rates and removing unhealthy or abnormal layers of superficial skin cells (exfoliation) where hyperpigmented cells can accumulate.

Other research has shown that lactic and glycolic acids can indeed inhibit melanin production and cause skin whitening, separate from their actions as an exfoliant on skin.

An ideal treatment for busy people who are unable to take time off work for a deeper peel or laser resurfacing, lactic acid facial peels gently retexture the skin over a period of a few months.

The skin peeling is not obvious for most people. But a remarkable change in skin tone and smoothness is definitely noticeable with regular use.

The treatments are also helpful in stabilising oily or acne-prone skin and improving skin tone.

Medium peels are usually performed with trichloroacetic acid. These peels are only performed once every couple of years. Medium peels have the same benefits as light peels and in addition remove larger wrinkles and precancerous skin lesions because of deeper penetration.

• Can be used on neck or other body areas
• May require pre-treatment with Retin-A or AHA creams
• Treatment takes only 10-15 minutes

• Sunblock must be used for several months
• Healing is usually quick, much quicker than with a phenol peel
